Hungary is just the place to kick off an Eastern European trip. The land of Franz Liszt and Béla
Bartók. Romani (Gypsy) music and the romantic Danube River continues to entice and enchant visitors. The allure of imperial Budapest is apparent on arrival, but other cities and the countryside prove equally entrancing. In Hungary you'll find much of the glamour and excitement of Western Europe - at half the cost. Budapest is an architecture buff's delight. Beautiful historic towns include Eger, Gyõr and Veszprém. Sopron and Kõszeg, in the far west, are among the few towns with a strong medieval flavour. The greatest monuments of the Turkish period are in Pécs.
Hungary's most famous castles are in Eger, Kõszeg and Siklós. Although in ruins, the citadel at Visegrád
still evokes strong images and the power of medieval Hungary. The Festetics Palace at Keszthely is amongst the finest in HungaryHungary is a paradise for cultural events. In Budapest there are several musical events every night, and excellent opera tickets are relatively inexpensive. Besides traditional opera, operetta and classical concerts, there are rock and jazz concerts, folk dancing, clubs and floor shows to keep you entertained. Hungary has a temperate continental climate with Mediterranean and Atlantic influences. Winters are cold, cloudy and damp or windy, and the summers are warm, and sometimes very hot. March, April and November are the wettest months. |
