The Slovak Republic, located in Central Europe, borders the Czech Republic in the west, Austria and
Hungary in the south, Ukraine in the east and Poland in the north. The prevailing continental climate
is characterised by cold winters and warm summers. Average temperatures range from 20º to -5º Celsius.
With its two millennia of history, for centuries the city of Bratislava was
the coronation seat of the former Hungarian monarchy. Today Bratislava occupies an
advantageous position on both banks of the Danube directly at the foot of the Lesser
Carpathians slopes. The most popular sights are Bratislava Castle, which dominates
the city, the coronation site of the Hungarian kings, St. Martin’s Cathedral, the
Archbishop’s Palace and the historic city centre.
Bratislava is also the seat of the Bratislava Opera and the Slovak National Theatre. Its numerous
cafes, bars, wine bars and wine cellars are filled with beautiful melodies of dulcimer bands
and provide an irresistible background for the sparkling colour of the fiery Carpathian wine.
The High Tatras are amongst the most popular holiday resorts in Slovakia
and a dominant feature situated in the north of the country. The Tatras allow easy
access to alpine terrain for hiking and provide suitable conditions for skiing holidays.
Starý Smokovec is a traditional recreational resort and a curative centre with climatic
spa in the heart of the mountain range. Piešťany is the world famous spa town just
70 kilometers north of Bratislava. The curative springs and mud help to cure rheumatic
conditions.
